What is a Back to Nature background?
Back to Nature backgrounds are deceptively realistic three-dimensional landscapes that can be used in aquariums and terrariums. They can partially or completely cover the rear glass wall and transform the aquarium into an exciting, lifelike environment in which the animals can thrive. Back to Nature backgrounds (BTNs) not only look good, they also have practical uses: Most animals feel more secure and can orientate themselves better.
In fact, some species do not even display their natural behaviour in “empty” aquariums. Another clear advantage is that all the technical equipment can be installed out of site behind the Back to Nature. The ideal solution is to install a large biological filter behind the Back to Nature that is effective for several years without having to be cleaned.

The History
When the Swedish Back to Nature aquarium backgrounds were introduced for the first time on a grand scale, 1994 at the Interzoo fair in Nuremberg, Germany (the largest pet trade fair in the world), they caused a tremendous sensation. They were a nearly perfect imitation of nature, down to the last detail. So much in fact, that many visitors couldn’t believe there were not real rocks and trees in the aquariums.
There was another novel feature about these backgrounds – they could be installed inside the aquarium thus making it possible to install filter material, pumps, heaters etc. behind the background and therefore keeping all of the technical equipment out of sight. A new trend within the aquarium trade was born − “Back to Nature”.
After the introduction, the first large scale production unit was built up in Kopparberg, Sweden. Soon it was too small, and production was moved to larger facilities. New models were designed and developed, more trade shows were attended. In 2003, production had grown enormously as compared with the initial years, and the production facilities had once again become too small. For this reason, founder Joel Malmström bought a large factory building (also located in Kopparberg) with ample space for larger and much more effective production.
In 2015 – after the tragic death of company founder Joel Malmström – the AquaLogistik GmbH takes over the operations. At the beginning of 2018, Sebastian Mozol for factory management and Daniel Heerz for marketing and sales took over responsibility for the Swedish company. The new management is supported in the aquaristic market by the world-famous aquascaper Oliver Knott.
Throughout the years, there have been countless attempts to introduce copies of these unique backgrounds onto the pet and aquarium market, However, Back to Nature remains the undisputed number one when it comes to beauty, durability and quality.
Today Back to Nature is a well-established and leading brand in the pet trade. Back to Nature is still produced and distributed throughout Sweden and exported to a network of distributors located across the globe.
In 2015 the German company AquaLogistik GmbH takes over the operations after the death of the company founder Joel Malmström. Since then, the Swedish company structure has been divided as follows; Marketing and sales through Germany as well as production and shipping via Sweden.
In 2019, Daniel Heerz and Sebastian Mozol take over the shares of the Swedish Back to Nature AB from the former parent company Aqualogistik GmbH with their founding company Back to Nature Holding GmbH. The location of the new company is in Soest, Germany. The production remains at the traditional location in Koppaberg, Sweden.
For more independence and proximity to the customer, a new shipping warehouse will be built in 2020 at the location 59494 Soest in Germany. From Germany we serve customers quickly and flexibly throughout the EU and beyond. At the same time, most of the wholesale agencies will be terminated. The specialist trade now has the opportunity to work directly with the manufacturer Back to Nature. Joint planning and product development, the expansion of a competent and strong dealer network are possible.
